To The Editor:

The extended unemployment safety net in our democracy faces a dilemma.

After extended long-term unemployment benefits expired Dec. 31, the U.S. Senate voted to extend these benefits. There is doubt that the U.S. House of Representatives will approve and do the same.

Now I ask, do we as a nation have a right at some point to insist that people who have been unemployed for some extended time accept public service work? The people would be required to do work in order to receive government unemployment benefits.

The Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s built roads, public buildings and schools. This should be a model for work by people receiving extended unemployment benefits.

Call your congressmen and let them know work never hurt anyone.
