“Your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body, and what is going on in your mouth can indicate what is going on everywhere else,” said Washington Square Dental Director of Operations Cara Smith.

This philosophy is at the core of Washington Square Dental and Washington Smiles merging their two offices this fall at the former location of the Tri-County Surgery Center. The merger will bring a new name and a new approach to dentistry that stands for complete health. The new name will be Washington Smiles Complete Health Dentistry.

“What that means is we have taken a new responsibility with the overall health of our patients,” Smith said. “We recognize the systemic links between oral health and your whole body health. It is a whole new paradigm shift.”

Bridging the gap between the medical and dental world, Washington Square Dental will do its best to recognize problems before they become bigger ones. While they won’t diagnosis health problems, they will make recommendations. This new approach makes it easier for people to receive guidance for their overall health.

“We’ve made a lot of changes in the standard of care that we provide our patients over the years,” Smith said. “Using digital X-rays with 80% less radiation than conventional X-rays, trans-illumination, high power magnification, intraoral photographs and a better understanding of dental diseases we are now able to diagnose problems sooner for better outcomes” she added.

When it comes to choosing the right dentist, Smith suggests that referrals are a great place to start as well as calling a dentist’s office to see if the receptionist is warm and welcoming on the phone. “This can give you a feel for that office’s personality and professionalism,” said Smith.

Washington Square Dental has four professional dentists to choose from: Dr. Melissa Smith D.D.S., Dr. Michael Frede D.D.S., Dr. Aruna Rajagopalan D.D.S., and Dr. Monika E.V. Strong D.D.S. “It is important for the patient to have the same treatment philosophies as their dentist,” Smith said. “My best advice would be to choose a dentist that you trust, that you are comfortable with, and that takes the time to give each and every patient the attention and care that they deserve,” she adds.

Having donated $165,000 in dental care by way of their annual Free Dental Care Day, Washington Smiles Complete Heath Dentistry cares about the oral health of our community. Their next Free Dental Care Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 11. It is on a first-come first-serve basis with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.

For a dazzling smile and overall healthy glow, schedule your next dental exam with Washington Square Dental. Serving Washington for over 20 years, they are committed to making each and every person's smile the best it can be.
