John Franklin Cole Jr., 87, Washington, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at Mercy Hospital Washington.

Mr. Cole was born June 16, 1924, in LaGrange, Ind., the son of John F. Cole Sr. and wife Elizabeth, nee Stevens.

He was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, the love of his live, Marian Preiss Jan. 11, 1947, at Notre Dame, St. Louis. To this union, three sons were born, Michael, Tim and Kelly.

Mr. Cole is survived by his wife, Marian Cole; two sons, Timothy Cole and wife Susan, Rosebud, and Kelly Cole and wife Lynda, Washington; three sisters, Florene Johnston, Moro Bay, Calif., Luella Noone and husband John, Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Marceline Cole, Washington; other relatives and many friends. He was a beloved uncle and great-uncle and was loved by his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, whom he was always quick with advice and wisdom that only a grandfather can give. He will live in their hearts forever. He also will be missed by his beloved dog, Meggie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Sherman Cole; one sister, Loraine Cole; one son, Michael Cole; and one grandson, Matthew Cole.

Mr. Cole proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received several medals for his service.

His smile, quick wit and laughter will be missed by all but never forgotten.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Washington, with Father Mike Boehm officiating.

Burial was in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, St. Louis.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society are preferred.

The family was served by Miller Funeral Home, Washington.
