John Walter Elbert, 59, Washington, passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011.

Mr. Elbert was born May 14, 1952, in Washington, the son of Ralph George Elbert and wife Elizabeth Rose, nee Peters.

He graduated from St. Francis Borgia Grade School and Washington High School. Mr. Elbert held an associate's degree in electronics.

On Aug. 3, 1974, he was united in marriage to Karen Sue Gumpenberger at St. Francis Borgia Church.

Mr. Elbert worked as an electronics technician for RK-TV for 35 years and most recently for RaComm Security.

He was a member of St. Francis Borgia Church, church usher, member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fourth Degree and Ducks Unlimited.

Mr. Elbert was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Elbert.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Elbert, Washington; his mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Elbert, Washington; two sons, Corey Elbert and wife Megan, New Haven, and Craig Elbert and wife Jennifer, Augusta; one daughter, Cindy Irwin and husband Brandon, New Haven; two grandchildren, Kyle and Andrew Elbert; one sister, Joan Wessel and husband Alan "Butch," Dutzow; one brother, Dan Elbert and wife Lori, Washington; his father-in-law, Everett Gumpenberger, Washington; other relatives and many friends.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, Sept. 8, at St. Francis Borgia Church, Washington, with the Rev. John Mayo officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials to St. Francis Borgia Church, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Mercy Hospice or Masses are preferred.
