Franklin County deputies and Missouri Highway Patrol officers arrested a man and woman Saturday morning following an attempted traffic stop and manhunt in the Krakow area.
The sheriff's office said the two fled after a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper on a motorcycle attempted to stop them on Highway BB for a traffic violation. The patrol has a non-pursuit policy for motorcycle officers so the patrol called in the sheriff's office to assist in the search for the suspects.
According to initial reports, the couple fled on foot from the vehicle and later went to a couple of homes in the area, asking for a ride, the sheriff's office said.
Eventually, the couple was located at Krakow Store. They were in the store's restaurant about 10 to 15 minutes and acting very nervous, a waitress told The Missourian. When officers arrived, the woman ran into the restroom. She was taken into custody in the store.
The man left the store and ran north on Highway A. He was taken into custody near Country Club Road, a sheriff's office spokesman said.
The spokesman said drug paraphernalia was found in the suspects' abandoned vehicle.
Officers were searching for a backpack that the couple discarded when they were fleeing on foot. Deputies suspect the backpack contains drugs, The Missourian was told.
