The Washington Jaycees have raised about $100,000 toward its $250,000 commitment for an all-abilities park through ongoing fundraising and sponsorships, said Danielle Grotewiel, Jaycees president.
The park, which is currently under construction near Lions Lake, has more than 20 pieces of equipment sponsored.
The Jaycees began raising funds in 2010, but made the $250,000 commitment last year. The group has five years to repay the sum to the city of Washington.
Grotewiel noted that the entire cost of the project, without any in-kind work or donations, is more than $750,000.
“That being said, there is a lot of in-kind work,” she said, noting the street department will finish grading and likely will install a retaining wall. Site excavation was donated by KJ Unnerstall and the Washington Rotary Club sponsored fencing, which is estimated at more than $50,000.
“The generosity of people in Washington and in Franklin County never ceases to amaze me,” Grotewiel said.
Sponsorships for equipment are still needed, she said, noting that some of the remaining items are on the pricier side.
Since the Jaycees still have four years to pay off their commitment to the city, sponsors also can donate under a four-year payment plan if needed.
Two Phases
The Washington Parks Department is working toward going out to bid for the first phase of the project.
Phase one includes concrete work, asphalt, storm sewers, curbs and sidewalks, playground base pad, fencing, retaining walls and pavement marking.
The second phase will include the playground equipment and surfacing.
While phase one is out to bid, the parks department and public works staff will continue in-house work.
“The mutual hope, as long as weather cooperates, is to have the park up and ready for play in spring 2013,” Grotewiel said.
Upcoming Event
The Jaycees’ third annual Picadilly Gala is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at St. Francis Borgia Jesuit Hall. Proceeds will benefit the All-Abilities Park.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. and the auction will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Grotewiel said that all types of donations will be accepted, including gift certificates and gift baskets.
