Melton Buys Harman Plant

Melton Machine & Control Company has purchased the former Harman International Company building at 851 Vossbrink Drive in the Heidmann Industrial Park.

The 89,000-plus-square-foot building is located on 23 acres at the northeast corner of Highway 100 and Vossbrink Drive.

Harman International closed the manufacturing facility in June 2012.

Melton Machine & Control Company (MMCC) currently has a 154,000-square-foot facility in Washington at 6350 Bluff Road. MMCC is a recognized leader in the field of automated arc welding, serving primarily the automotive industry. The firm is a value-focused designer and builder of equipment, fixtures and tooling and an innovative, experienced partner in developing custom solutions for factory automation.

MMCC was founded in 1970 and relocated from St. Louis to Washington in 1975. The company built the current new facility in 1999 and expanded in 2007 with an addition of 44,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

MMCC is a 100 percent employee-owned company that currently employs 92 full-time employees and creates many more quality jobs in the community through significant subcontracting.

MMCC purchased Computech Manufacturing Company, Inc. (CMC) in May 2010.

CMC also designs and manufactures automated systems for pharmaceutical, military, aerospace and general manufacturing. Additional products of CMC include components for aircraft ignition systems and personal cooling devices for NASCAR drivers and NASA astronauts. CMC currently employs 32 full-time employees.

This is a perfect fit of a first-rate facility for a first-rate company,” said Darren Lamb, community and economic development director for the city of Washington.

“It is always exciting when a local industry expands in our community,” said Mayor Sandy Lucy. “We are very pleased to have the job creation by this expansion of MMCC and CMC.”

“The recent recovery of the U.S. auto industry has afforded us unique opportunities and our response was being limited due to capacity constraints,” said Randy Folkmann, president and CEO of MMCC. “We looked at multiple options and this new facility represents a long-term solution toward our goal of increasing the capacity for both of our companies. I would like to thank Mayor Lucy, the city of Washington, Darren Lamb and all of our own employees and service providers who have worked so hard in a cooperative effort to make this happen.”

The Harman company broke ground for its $26 million facility in early 2005. The city initially issued $30 million in Chapter 100 bonds for the project and later issued another $30 million for an expansion and additional equipment.

Negotiations for the sale of the building had been ongoing for months. A number of companies looked at the building.

When the Harman company was in full operation, it employed more than 300 people at the Washington plant.
