Members of the Washington Dog Park group have nominated the city to win $100,000 to build a dog park in Washington through the PetSafe 2013 Bark for Your Park contest.
PetSafe, a pet supply manufacturer, invited U.S. communities to participate in the third annual contest, which began May 1. One city will be awarded the $100,000 prize to build a local dog park. Four other finalists will receive $25,000.
Now that Washington has been nominated, a location for the dog park must be secured, as well as support from city leaders.
The Washington Park Board already has said the dog park is a top priority, however, a location has not yet been determined.
“We learned last week that the dog park is not in the city budget and we’re not sure that it will be able to be in the budget for next year. This would be a great start to getting a permanent dog park in Washington,” said Julia West, dog park spokesperson.
As contest judges determine the 15 finalists, PetSafe will review the availability of land and civic leaders’ support.
Citizens will be able to vote every day to help their city move forward in the contest.
Votes also will be counted in choosing finalists.
Finalists will be announced on June 5, when they will be asked to produce a video and continue “barking for their park.”
The finalist city with the most votes will receive $100,000 to build a PetSafe dog park. Three runners-up and the city with the highest percentage of votes relative to its population will each receive $25,000. Winners will be announced on July 31.
