A Wright City family narrowly escaped after an early morning fire that quickly engulfed their mobile home in Orchard Farm Park last Thursday morning.
“I woke up when I heard my stepmom yelling ‘fire,’ ” said Anjelah Veach, who was sleeping in the next room when the fire broke out. “The cherry on her cigarette hit the oxygen tank and caught the loveseat on fire.”
Veach, her father, stepmother, sister and sister’s boyfriend escaped from the home unharmed.
Warrenton Fire Protection District Capt. Anthony Hayeslip said the call for the fire in the 28000 block of Orchard Farm Road came in at 8:30 a.m. Firefighters worked quickly and were able to have the fire under control by around 9 a.m.
Kammie Daugherty, a neighbor, woke up when she heard the sirens.
“I jumped up, got dressed and saw smoke was rolling out of their house,” she said. “I told my mom to get dressed because I thought they (firefighters) might tell us to evacuate.”
No nearby trailer homes were damaged from the fire.
Hayeslip said the home was most likely a total loss.
