This week will be the last full week for the Union Splash-N-Swimplex.
Union Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Arand said the pool will be open through this week and closed Aug. 16-20.
The pool will be open Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 21-22, and will host a free dog swim Tuesday, Aug. 24, from about 5-7:30 p.m.
The pool is closing a little earlier than last year.
The complex was slated to close after Labor Day weekend in 2009 but closed at the beginning of September because of low temperatures and attendance.
"To continue to pour chlorine into the water when the pool isn't even open is costly," Arand said Tuesday.
With lifeguard staff, made up of college and high school students, returning to school and beginning fall sports practices, City Administrator Russell Rost told city aldermen it'd be unreasonable to keep the pool open longer.
Fall sports practices for Union High School students began Monday.
Rost said the pool also was experiencing some maintenance issues.
Crews will have to repair part of the filter system, Rost said noting issues with the clarity of the water in the mornings.
"It isn't a health issue, just a maintenance issue," Arand said. "And it will be a lot easier to take care of once the pool is empty, so we're just going to wait."
Arand said the parks department is waiting on some of those replacement parts to arrive in the mail.
In addition to the filtration system work, the complex will receive several upgrades during the offseason.
Arand said the complex will receive new shading partitions.
"The partitions we have are 15 years old. They're dated," he said.
Video surveillance cameras also will be added.
"For the safety of our patrons and to help reduce the chance of vandalism, we'll be adding the cameras, expanding on what we have in the parks system," Arand said.
"We have 15 cameras at our main park already and we'll gradually continue to add camera systems to all our parks," he said.
The pool will be open to the public from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Friday and 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.
