Veterans Group to Have Office in Courthouse

Franklin County will allow a nonprofit to open an office in the county’s Veterans Hall of Honor, located in the courthouse in Downtown Union.

County Counselor Mark Vincent, an Army veteran, said organizers have been working on establishing the nonprofit for some time, with the help of county commissioners.

“It’s something we can do to at least start to pay back part of the debt we owe to our veterans,” Vincent said.

He offered his legal services to help establish the nonprofit, and negotiate the lease for the office space.

The nonprofit will offer veterans outreach services to some of those who might otherwise fall through the cracks of the system.

The grassroots group will help point veterans in the right direction to find services, determine how many veterans are in the community and find the best way to serve them, organizer Mike Pate said earlier this year.

Some of the other services the organization hopes to offer include decentralizing veterans housing and helping with job training.

The organization had office space on Washington Avenue previously and was seeking volunteers to answer calls and staff the office.
