More than 30,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and venturers helped feed the hungry throughout our region Saturday as they collected 1.8 million items of food during the 2011 Scouting for Food drive, sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors.

The Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, collected more than 45 million items of food during the 27-year history of the drive.

After distributing more than 1 million bags the weekend before, on Saturday the Scouts returned to those same areas to collect canned goods and other nonperishables.

“The amount of food collected will help thousands of families who need assistance,” said Ron Green, Scout executive of the Greater St. Louis Area Council. “Our Scouts, parents and leaders did a great job collecting food and preparing the donations for the pantries. The generous donations by general public and the hard work of our Scouts will help the less fortunate through the difficult winter months.”
