The Missourian news staff won a total of 10 national awards in the 2012 Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the National Newspaper Association.
The awards were presented Saturday, Oct. 6, at the 126th annual NNA convention held in Charleston, S.C.
The Missourian brought home three first-place awards, one second-place, three third-place and three honorable mention awards in the competition.
The newspaper won an honorable mention in the General Excellence category which judges all facets of the newspaper.
There were a total of 1,954 entries in the competition this year. A total of 525 awards were won by 135 newspapers from 36 states.
Following are the awards won by The Missourian:
• First place, Best Family Life/Living Section/Pages, Daily and Non‐daily Division, Karen Cernich;
• First place, Best Local News Coverage, Daily and Non‐daily Division, circulation 6,000 or more;
• First place, Best Sports Photo, Non‐daily Division, circulation 10,000 or more, Bill Battle;
• Second place, Best Sports Section/Page, Daily and Non‐daily Division, Bill Battle, Craig Vonder Haar;
• Third place, Best Editorial, Daily and Non‐daily Division, circulation 10,000 or more, Bill Miller Sr.;
• Third place, Best Environmental Story, Daily and Non‐daily Division, circulation 9,000 or more, Karen Cernich, Jeanne Miller Wood.;
• Third place, Best Sports Photo, Non‐daily Division, circulation 10,000 or more, Bill Battle;
• Honorable Mention, Best Business Feature Story, Non‐daily Division, circulation 6,000 or more, Karen Cernich;
• Honorable Mention, Best Editorial Pages, Daily and Non‐daily Division, circulation 6,000 or more; and
• Honorable Mention, General Excellence.
The Missourian won four national awards in the 2011 national competition, including three first-place awards.
