Schlumps Establish Library Endowment at East Central
The East Central College Foundation recently announced the creation of the Kathy and Don Schlump Library Endowment.
Kathy Schlump has worked in the ECC Library for 17 years, and has served the past six years as director of library services.
Schlump will retire this June 30, and the establishment of this endowment celebrates her 20-year career working in area libraries.
Funded by a $10,000 endowment from the Schlump family, income will be used to benefit the library. The endowment will provide an opportunity for the library director to purchase a variety of items for students’ needs from research, general knowledge and the classics to audio books, music CDs and educational media.
“I’ve loved working at East Central because of the great work we do — helping people create better lives for themselves and their families,” said Schlump. “Even though I am retiring I wanted to remain a part of that great work, so Don and I decided to create an endowment for the college.”
Schlump noted that rather than set up a scholarship which would help a handful of students, she and her husband decided to create an endowment for the library which can help every student.
“The library helps students in so many ways. It helps them with their education and course work, entertains and enriches them, and can even encourage and inspire them,” Schlump said.
“I hope other people will consider a monetary donation to the library when they think about giving to ECC,” she said. “It’s a gift of knowledge, beauty and insight.”
“Just as with our endowed scholarships, this donation will be a permanent fund with the money invested,” noted Shannon Grus, executive director of the East Central College Foundation. “Investment income will be used to make purchases for the library, but the original value of the fund will not be spent.”
The ECC Foundation was established to support the growth and development of ECC in whatever manner benefits the students, staff and facilities.
It solicits and receives tax-deductible gifts which are managed for the benefit of the college and its students.
