Branson — Playing a deciding championship game in the Missouri State American Legion Freshmen Tournament, Washington Post 218 knocked off Ste. Genevieve Sunday in Branson, 8-0.
The state championship is the first for the Freshmen program in Post 218's history.
Post 218 (39-2) lost to St. Genevieve 2-1 Saturday in the first title game, forcing a second and winner-take-all contest on Sunday.
Washington was in complete control of Sunday's game, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, two in the second and four in the seventh.
Evan Ayers tossed a complete game shutout for Post 218 to earn the win on the mound.
More details will appear in Wednesday's Missourian and a photo gallery from the state tournament will be posted at www.emissourian.com early in the week.
