A person was killed Tuesday afternoon north of Sullivan when he or she was involved in a fiery one-vehicle crash on Highway 185 near Mossy Glen Road.

The name of the individual involved in the crash has not been released. The Missouri Highway Patrol did not return calls to The Missourian by press time Friday.

Sullivan Fire Department Chief Rich White said crews responded to the scene at 6:37 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, and found a truck that had crashed into a tree engulfed in flames.

“It came to us as a vehicle accident into a tree with fire,” White said. “We didn’t know there was a body involved until the fire was knocked down.”

White said he believes the body was found on the ground just outside the truck. He said it appears the driver was ejected.

There was no one else involved, White said.

The chief said the fire was under control at 7:20 p.m.

According to published reports, the northbound pickup ran off the right side of the road, crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

The stretch of Highway 185 between Tobias and Spring Bluff Road was temporarily closed.

White said the final crew left the scene at 9:06 p.m.
