MoDOT to Close I-44 Lanes for Three Nights to Remove Highway 100 Bridge

All lanes on Interstate 44 are scheduled to be closed three nights next week as work begins to replace the Highway 100 overpass near Gray Summit.

The overpass, located east of the Highway 100 Washington exit, will be removed and replaced with a new bridge over I-44.

Starting Tuesday evening, May 15, and continuing through Thursday, May 17, crews will close both east- and westbound I-44 lanes under the overpass from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

After 5 a.m. each morning one eastbound and one westbound lane on I-44 will close, while the other two lanes in each direction will remain open.

A Missouri Department of Transportation spokesperson said the lane closures on both I-44 and Route 100 are necessary in order for crews to remove the existing bridge.

MoDOT said during closures, motorists can use the following detour routes to bypass the area:

• Eastbound I-44 — Detour to Route O, then to Route F, then to West Osage Street to access I-44.

• Westbound I-44 — Detour to Route 100 (Gray Summit exit), then take Route MM west to Route T to get back to Highway 100 to access I-44.

The construction project will replace the deteriorating bridge on Route 100 over Interstate 44 located between the Gray Summit and Washington interchanges.

This new bridge will provide a safe structure for many years and reduce maintenance costs on the existing structure, which meets MoDOT’s goal to keep bridges in good condition. Construction is expected to be complete by mid-August 2012. MoDOT is working with schools to work around their spring and fall sessions.

Fred Weber Construction is the contractor on the approximate $1.3 million bridge replacement.

MoDOT urges motorists to watch for orange signs and workers and slow down in the construction zone.
