Excitement is building for the annual fireworks display rescheduled for Labor Day weekend, said Dave Anderson, Washington American Legion commander.

The fireworks show will be held Sunday, Sept. 2, with a rain date of Sept. 3.

A lack of substantial rainfall and high fire risk forced the Legion to postpone its traditional July 4 display. The plan was to reschedule for July 14, but conditions were still too dry.

“Everything is a go,” Anderson said. “If we don’t have it on Sept. 2, or the rain date of Sept. 3, it will be delayed until next July 4, but I’m very confident that won’t happen.”

He said the company the city uses to shoot fireworks, Lantis Fireworks and Lasers in Eureka, has done other displays in Missouri without any problems.

“I think we’re OK. It’s not as dry as it was,” he said. “I think as far as safety is concerned, everything is going to be fine.”

Anderson said that Lantis is a very reliable and conscientious about safety.

With September just around the corner, Anderson said he and members of the Legion are excited about the show.

“There’s anticipation. This will be the first time we’ve had it this late in the summer,” he said, adding that crowds may even be better because it’s a holiday weekend and students are off school.

Anderson said the public has been very understanding about the previous cancellations.

“I’d like to thank the public for bearing with us. (Canceling the July shows) was a hard decision to make, but it was in the best interest and safety of the community.” he added. “I think it was a good decision.”
