Two men suffered injuries Thursday afternoon when the tractor-trailers they were driving crashed on eastbound Interstate 44 near the Union exit.
According to Missouri Highway Patrol reports, Raymond J. Moore, 55, of Stronghurst, Ill., was driving his 1998 Peterbilt rig eastbound on I-44 near the 245 mile marker at 12:43 p.m. when he slowed because of traffic congestion. The driver of the second truck, Dirk V. Boulware, 25, of Carlysle, Ill., failed to observe the slowed rig ahead of him and crashed into the rear of it. The rigs ended up pressed against the barrier that separates the eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway.
Both drivers were taken by St. Clair Ambulance to St. John's Mercy Hospital in Washington. Moore's injuries were listed as moderate while Boulware's were minor.
Traffic was backed up for miles because of the accident. Travel was restricted to one lane both eastbound and westbound until emergency crews left the scene, the rigs were towed and the debris cleared.
Boulware's 2007 Freightliner was totaled. Damage to the Peterbilt was moderate.
