JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — April is National Safe Digging Month in Missouri and other states, and regulators are reminding Missourians to check the location of buried utility lines before they start projects that require digging.

Missouri law requires that people planning to dig call 1-800-DIG-RITE at least three days before excavations starts. Utility workers then will mark the location of buried lines, pipes and cables to prevent damage.

Missouri Public Service Commission chairman Kevin Gunn says hitting a utility line can lead to significant repair costs and cause injury or death.
