COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Nine Missouri towns along the Katy Trail are hosting a series of events starting this weekend to spotlight the country's longest recreational path carved from a converted rail line.

The weeklong "Discover the Katy Trail" bike ride begins Sunday with a 3 p.m. kickoff at the trail's western spur in Clinton. The ride moves on to Sedalia on Monday, Boonville on Tuesday, Rocheport on Wednesday, Jefferson City on Thursday and Hermann and Gore on Friday.

The final stops are scheduled in Augusta on Oct. 6 and St. Charles on Oct. 7.

The Columbia-based Missouri Rivers Communities Network is sponsoring the project, along with a Katy Trail merchants' group and the state Department of Natural Resources.

Activities along the way will include music, wine tastings and vineyard tours.
