FLORISSANT, Mo. (AP) — A St. Louis man is facing charges in the shooting of a Florissant police officer.

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged 20-year-old Brian Lamont Cannon Jr. with assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and burglary.

Officer Mike Vernon was shot around 3 a.m. Monday while helping search for two burglary suspects. Vernon is hospitalized in critical but stable condition following surgery. Police say he has a spinal cord injury and a bullet penetrated his lungs.

Vernon is 33 and a seven-year veteran of the police force.

Police say Vernon was able to give a description of the suspect, who was found behind a home soon after the shooting.

Cannon is jailed and does not have a listed attorney.
