A Carl Junction man was killed and a woman seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon when they were involved in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 44 near Stanton.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported that 52-year-old Mark O’Hara was killed in the crash that occurred on the westbound interstate about seven-tenths of a mile west of Highway W. Driver Phyllis N. O’Hara, 51, also of Carl Junction, suffered the serious injuries.

According to the patrol’s online report, Phyllis O’Hara was westbound on I-44  at 4:40 p.m. on Aug. 1 driving a 2004 Ford Explorer west of the Stanton exit when she became distracted. She lost control of the vehicle and traveled off the left side of the highway striking the cable barrier in the median. The Explorer continued across the median and across the eastbound lanes of the interstate and off the south side of the highway where it overturned.

Phyllis O’Hara partially was ejected from the vehicle while Mark O’Hara was ejected. Neither was wearing a safety belt.

Both individuals were transported by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital St. Louis. Mark O’Hara was pronounced dead there shortly after 6 p.m.

The Explorer was totaled.
