The Route 66 Car Club is breaking tradition and will sponsor three Saturday night "Kruise-In" events at Orchard Park over the next few months.

Club President John Mueller attended the most recent St. Clair Parks and Recreation Board meeting and said for the past 21 years, the group has put on a Father's Day car show.

"This year we decided to do something different," he said.

The Kruise-In events will feature a drive-in movie as part of the festivities. The dates are all Saturdays - May 21, July 23 and Sept. 24. Rain dates for the last two days are Aug. 13 and Oct. 8, respectively.

Mueller said the activities will start at about 5 p.m. each time. The movies will be shown at dusk. Vehicles will be parked in typical drive-in style on the park's soccer field with a 12- by 16-foot blow-up movie screen used.

Movies shown will be "American Graffiti" on May 21, "Grease" on July 23 and "Cars" on Sept. 24.

"The Kruise-In is not only for classic and antique cars," Mueller said. "All cars (and trucks) are welcome."

Admission will be $10 per carload. Proceeds will help fund the club's scholarship program.

In addition, drivers of the first 50 vehicles to show up will receive a T-shirt and a dash plaque. T-shirts also will be for sale as will food and drink. A 50/50 raffle will be conducted each time.

Park board President Beth Lauer said during the April board meeting that the car club events will provide the opportunity to draw individuals to St. Clair.

"This is something that could benefit the community," she said.

The city is providing use of the Orchard Park pavilion free of charge for each of the three events.

"We agreed there will be no fee this year," Lauer said.

Mueller said car club members will evaluate the success of the events at the end of the year and determine whether they will want to do it again in 2012.

"We'll see how it goes," he said.
