A St. Clair man has been jailed after he allegedly challenged sheriff's deputies to a race before speeding through a town in Maries County.
Police say the man, identified as 31-year-old David Williams, pulled up to sheriff's deputies who were helping a stranded motorist on Highway 63 near Vichy early Sunday. He asked if they wanted to race and drove off.
Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman said deputies chased the vehicle at speeds of more than 90 mph into the city of Vienna. Eventually, officers hit the car and stopped it. Heitman said officers had to drag the man out of the car.
The sheriff said Williams appeared to be impaired at the time. He said the suspect has several prior felony convictions.
Williams is in the Maries County Jail. Bond has been set at $250,000.
