Due to restricted funding for the summer school program, the Meramec Valley R-III School District will not offer the Edison Learning program this summer.

At the April 18 meeting, the school board approved Superintendent Randy George’s recommendation to move to its own summer school plan.

“For the past two fiscal years, there have been discussions of summer school funding being restricted to only core academic areas, credit recovery, and extended school year,” George said.

“With the current single-funding level for the summer session and no assurances as yet from the state of Missouri regarding 2012 summer school funding, I recommended that the district exercise the 30-day opt-out clause in the Edison Learning contract for the summer of 2012.

The school board unanimously approved the measure to notify Edison Learning of the decision.

In lieu of the Edison program, the district is looking to utilize the School Age Child Care (SACC) program for the summer.

A full-day SACC program will be planned with a start date of May 21, 2012.

The sites would be combined and are currently planned to include Coleman, Truman and Zitzman Elementary schools.

Without a full-day summer school program, a full-day SACC program is vital to district students and parents.

The School Age Child Care (SACC) program has developed a program to help students play and learn during the summer months.
