A Phelps County man died Sunday, May 27, when the car he was riding in ran off Highway 185 near Spring Bluff and crashed.

The Missouri Highway Patrol said Autumn J. Smith, 25, Rolla, was driving a 2011 Nissan Altima southbound on Highway 185 and failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The car ran off the right side of the road, struck a driveway culvert, went airborne and struck a tree.

A passenger, 26-year-old Christopher A. Harrah, Rolla, sustained fatal injuries in the 3:59 p.m. crash, according to the preliminary patrol report. Harrah, who was not wearing a safety belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said.

Smith, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained serious injuries, according to the patrol. She was taken by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital St. Louis, Creve Coeur, for treatment.

Another passenger, Christopher L. Harrah, 5, was to taken by Gerald Ambulance to Missouri Baptist Hospital, Sullivan, for treatment of moderate injuries.

Smith was arrested and later released on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, and faces possible charges of involuntary manslaughter and second-degree assault, according to an arrest report on the patrol’s website.

The crash happened north of Little Boone Creek Road, between Sullivan and Beaufort, the patrol reported.
