UPDATE: Sullivan Man Arrested, Charged in Carjacking Incident
A Sullivan man accused of attempted robbery and carjacking in an incident Thursday night is in custody in the Franklin County Jail.
Authorities were applying for charges against the 37-year-old man Friday as The Weekend Missourian was going to press.
The sheriff’s office said the department received a call about 10:30 p.m. from Sullivan police that they were questioning the victim of the carjacking.
The sheriff’s office said the department received a call about 10:30 p.m. from Sullivan police that they were questioning the victim of the carjacking.
The victim said he had received a text message from a female acquaintance earlier that night asking him to come to her residence on Springfield Road, the sheriff’s office reported.
The victim said as he was walking toward the woman’s residence, the suspect, who had a gun and a hammer, confronted him and demanded money.
He said he told the suspect that he didn’t have any money but that he could get some from a friend.
The suspect then took his car and drove to Precision Metal where the victim was supposed to call a friend who worked there and ask him to bring out some money.
When they arrived at the plant, the victim said he dropped his cellphone while attempting to make the call. When he opened the door to turn on the dome light, he jumped out of the car and started yelling for people to call 911.
The suspect then fled in the man’s car, but was identified by witnesses who saw him fleeing from the business, the sheriff’s office noted.
Sheriff’s deputies and Sullivan police began searching and arrested the suspect at his home in Sullivan. He was taken into custody without incident.
The victim later positively identified the suspect, the sheriff’s office said.
