Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke said Tuesday afternoon that the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's Office had not been able to determine the cause of death of a 2-month-old baby found unresponsive earlier in the day.

There were no obvious signs of what caused the baby's death, the sheriff said. Investigators now are awaiting results of toxicology tests, which could take several weeks, he said.

Earlier Story

An autopsy was scheduled in the death of a baby, authorities said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said the mother of 2-month-old Ava Declue was checking on her child shortly before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, and found the baby unresponsive.

Deputies responded about 4:25 a.m. to the woman's home on New Street outside of Sullivan.
