Man Found Dead on St. Clair I-44 Exit Ramp Identified

St. Clair Police have released the name of the 43-year-old man who was found dead on the westbound Interstate 44 exit 240 ramp early Thursday.

Nermin Muhic, 43, of Milford, N.H., was found shortly before 5 a.m. on Thursday lying next to a parked semitrailer.

Foul play is not suspected.

The deceased man was one of two found this week in and around St. Clair. On Tuesday afternoon, emergency responders were called to Highway K just south of Plum Ford Road for a report of a man lying off the highway next to his motorcycle.

That man was identified as 76-year-old Frank E. Carwitz, 76, of Sullivan. Foul play also is not suspected in this case.

Interstate 44 Off Ramp

St. Clair Police Chief Bill Hammack told The Missourian that at 4:54 a.m. on Thursday, officers were dispatched to the I-44 off ramp at exit 240 in reference to a man lying next to a parked semi on the exit ramp. When law enforcement arrived, Muhic already was dead.

Hammack said officers did not observe any obvious signs of trauma. He said it is possible the man was conducting repairs on the vehicle prior to the arrival of officers.

An official cause of death will not be determined until certified results are received from the medical examiner’s office.

Highway K

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, Carwitz was driving a 2009 Bonneville Triumph motorcycle south on Highway K a few miles south of St. Clair at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, and had just passed the Plum Ford Road intersection when he suffered some kind of  medical condition.

The bike traveled off the right side of the road and through the yard at 2975 Highway K.

A passerby saw the man and the bike in the yard and called 911. St. Clair Ambulance District personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced him dead at 5:20 p.m.

The emergency responders had said at the scene that it did not look like Carwitz had suffered traumatic injuries. He was wearing a helmet.

The man was on the ground immediately next to the motorcycle.
