A new eatery, Rebecca’s Cafe & Desserts, recently opened at 5501 Locust St., Augusta.

Owners Judy and Robert Gross of Marthasville opened the cafe April 13.

The cafe is open on Fridays and Saturdays for lunch and dinner. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Judy Gross is in her final semester in the East Central College culinary arts program and will graduate in August. After she graduates, the couple plan to expand the hours.

The cafe, which is located where Cafe Bella used to be, is named after the Grosses’ daughter, Rebecca.

“When the space became available, we thought it was perfect,” Judy Gross said. “It’s small and has a really nice outside seating area.”

The cafe’s main entree offerings include soups, salads, sandwiches and quiche.

Cheesecake is one of the most popular desserts, Judy Gross said, but many other desserts also are available  including desserts made with seasonal fruits.

“We’re trying to keep local, fresh, seasonal dishes on our menu,” she said. “Virtually everything is homemade except some breads. I’m hoping that once I have more time I can make the breads too.”

Many of the ingredients will come from the Washington Farmers’ Market, Thierbachs Orchard in Marthasville and Centennial Farms in Augusta.

Eventually, Gross hopes to work with Geisert Farms in Washington to get pork products.

She also plans to have a dinner later this month with a menu composed completely of food grown or raised in the region.

Prior to owning the restaurant, Robert and Judy Gross owned Critter Cottage Bed & Breakfast in Marthasville, but Judy Gross said she felt like a restaurant provided more opportunity.

In the future, the couple hope to host events and provide catering.
