A 31-year-old man was charged with stealing a vehicle that he crashed on Interstate 44 Wednesday.

Dylan Wilson was charged Thursday in Franklin County Associate Circuit Court with stealing a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest. Prosecutors requested a $20,000 bond. Wilson’s last known address was in Florida.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s office, a silver Lexus SUV driven at a high rate of speed with no license plates passed a Franklin County detective driving westbound on I-44 near the 236 mile marker at 7:40 a.m.

The detective attempted to catch up to the vehicle and activated the emergency lights at the rest area. The vehicle passed a tractor-trailer on the left of I-44 and crossed over onto the South Service Road while still traveling westbound.

Wilson lost control of the vehicle and rolled the SUV that came to rest on the shoulder of I-44, authorities said.

As the detective reached the accident scene, Wilson had already fled on foot into a wooded area.

The driver is described as a white male wearing a black shirt, camouflage pants and possibly carrying a grey hooded sweatshirt, according to the sheriff’s office.

The vehicle was reported stolen from Manchester.

Two residents notified the Franklin County Sheriff’s office Wednesday stating a man matching the description of the suspect was seen walking in the area of Springfield Road near Anaconda at 2:15 p.m.

Deputies, state troopers and St. Clair police responded to the area and apprehended the suspect without incident.
