The Washington City Council granted a temporary site license for a cellphone tower at the Washington Fairgrounds.

An ordinance granting the license to Cingular Wireless was approved Monday night.

The temporary tower would be erected on the fairgrounds during June, July and August to help improve communications in that area.

During the 2012 Fair, cellphone communication was a problem when a storm pushed through the area forcing evacuation of the fairgrounds. The solution to that problem since 2013 has been the temporary tower.

The company will pay the city $500 a month. The tower will be removed at the end of August.
