As of Tuesday afternoon, only the two incumbents have filed for the Washington School Board election in April.

Kevin Blackburn, current board president, and John Freitag, vice president, both of Washington, filed last Tuesday, opening day.

There are two open seats on the April ballot. Board members are elected to three-year terms.

Candidates should register in Julie Bell’s office on the second floor of the district administration building at 220 Locust St. in Washington.

Regular filing hours will be on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last day to file is Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The district office will be closed for winter break from the close of business this Friday, Dec. 22, through Monday, Jan. 1. Offices will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2.

The district also will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Last year, a total of six candidates ran for three open seats.

The board member qualifications are set by state statute, and there is a slight change this year. Previously, candidates could not have been found guilty of nor pled guilty to a felony or misdemeanor. Misdemeanor has been removed.
