A Gracie Barra Martial Arts School recently opened in the old Photojournalism Hall of Fame building at 8 West Second St. in Downtown Washington.

The hours of operation are Monday through Thursday noon to 9 p.m., Friday noon to 8 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The facility is closed on Sundays.

Sam Hess, the head instructor, started learning martial arts when he was 4 years old and began training at a Gracie Barra at age 11.

Hess said the practice of jiu jitsu is focused on the ground aspects of fighting, comparing it with wrestling, but with more submissions.

“It teaches you to not be so close-minded,” he said due to students having to constantly adapt with the practice.

The school also teaches kickboxing and MMA. Both kids and adults are welcome.

A training special for the summer is being offered for the first 100 to register at https://gbwashington.com.
