Washington City Council members have granted a temporary site license for a cellphone tower at the Washington Fairgrounds.

An ordinance granting the license to AT&T was approved Monday night.

The “Cell on Wheels” tower would be erected on the fairgrounds during June, July and August to help improve communications in that area.

During last year’s Fair, cellphone communication was a problem when a storm pushed through the area forcing evacuation of the fairgrounds.

“Calls couldn’t get out,” City Administrator Jim Briggs noted. “This will enhance service for that area.”

The company will pay the city $500 a month. The tower will be removed at the end of August.
