Health and safety experts from Mercy Hospital Washington will be at the Lions Club Picnic and Auction this Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Miles Gray Park in Gray Summit. Miles Park is located on Highway 100 in Gray Summit, just north of Interstate 44.

Mercy is a sponsor of the event.

Among the many events and activities, Mercy will offer fitness and nutritional advice, bicycle helmet fittings and car seat safety checks starting at noon.

Experts from Mercy Nutrition and Diabetes Wellness Center will offer nutrition and fitness advice to families to help them make healthy lifestyle choices.

Each year nearly 50,000 bicyclists suffer serious head injuries. Properly fitted helmets can reduce accidental head injuries by 85 percent.

Staff from Mercy Trauma Services will make sure helmets are properly fitted to help protect children from injuries associated with cycling. Attendees will receive free helmets while supplies last.

Car safety seats are seats designed specifically for babies, toddlers and children to protect them from injury or death in an automobile collision. Studies have shown that four out of five car seats are installed improperly. Representatives from Mercy will offer free car seat checks by certified car seat inspectors and go over the newest safety recommendations for traveling with children.
