An 18-year-old suspect involved in a fatal car crash while fleeing from St. Louis police Tuesday was under investigation by Franklin County detectives, authorities said.
The man, 18-year-old William J. Gallagher, 18, St. George, was charged Wednesday in St. Louis with second-degree murder and other crimes in connection with the fatal crash.
Sheriff Gary Toelke said for several weeks his officers had been looking for a 16-year-old Pacific area girl who ran away from home and believed she was with the 18-year-old suspect who was staying in the St. Louis area.
Sheriff's deputies had been exchanging information with St. Louis police in an attempt to locate the two.
On Tuesday, information was received about the location of the man and juvenile. St. Louis city officers confronted the suspect who was in a vehicle with the juvenile girl.
The suspect fled in the car and drove a short distance before striking several cars, then fled on foot but was apprehended later.
An 87-year-old woman died in the car crash, the sheriff said.
The suspect was not identified and the case remains under investigation.
