The first season of Catholic Youth Council (CYC) soccer in Franklin County went well, according to Washington resident Dr. John Simmons who got the program started.

A total of four teams recently completed their season, said Simmons, noting the CYC program was not formed to compete with the Washington or Franklin County soccer programs.

Instead, Simmons said he just wanted to see “another layer” of soccer preparation added for youth not participating in the other programs or for those who were, a program that would augment and enhance their skills.

The CYC is a recreational league with a spiritual orientation.

After each game there is a brief prayer to “remind kids of the purpose” of the program, said Simmons, adding the league also teaches good sportsmanship.

For the first season, there were enough children to field four co-ed teams in kindergarten and first grade. As the program expands, Simmons said the goal is to have boys and girls teams in each grade.

Simmons offered his experience as a coach and trainer and hopes to recruit parents and other knowledgeable volunteers to coach as the league grows.

Another goal, he said, is to organize teams by class at school so classmates can play together.

This year, teams were comprised of seven children with five on the field at a time.

The lower team number helped ensure that everyone who wanted to participate could, Simmons said, and that each child had more instruction time and time with the ball.

Practice took place at the St. Francis Borgia Regional High School soccer field.

Simmons noted that the program is not exclusive and all children can participate.

This year’s coaches included Joe Callahan, Steve Williams, Matt Apprill and Bill Elcan. Referees were Lexsie Hanse and Jack Conroy.

The next registration will be held in the spring for the fall 2014 season.

Registration information will be available in parish bulletins and through other media closer to the registration date.
