Police are investigating reports of counterfeit money being passed in Washington and nearby communities recently.

Detective Sgt. Steve Sitzes of the Washington Police Department said fake bills were passed at the Washington Landfill, Schnucks and Burger King recently.

Union police reported that a fake $10 bill was passed June 15 at a gas station there.

Sitzes said bogus $5 bills were passed in Washington.

Police aren’t certain if there is a connection with an investigation last spring in Wright City where officers received information about a possible counterfeiting ring and seized $1,070 in fake bills along with paper and a printer at a home.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in that incident and police applied for charges. Two people of interest are also being sought for questioning.

That case remains under investigation but police believe some of the fake bills also were found in Truesdale and Troy.
