Several administrative changes are being made in the Washington School District.

The district has hired a new principal at Clearview Elementary and an associate principal at Washington Middle School, and is now looking for a new principal at Marthasville Elementary.

“We’ve been busy,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Brendan Mahon.

Matt Busekrus of Troy has been hired as the Clearview principal, and will begin July 1. He replaces Dawn Hellebusch, who recently was named director of the district’s new Early Learning Center which will open in August.

Busekrus is currently principal of Hawk Point Elementary in the Lincoln County R-III School District.

He has been principal at Hawk Point for the past five years. Prior to that he was an assistant principal for two years, and a sixth-grade teacher for five years.

Busekrus received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Central Missouri State University, master’s in educational administration from Lindenwood University, educational specialist degree from Missouri Baptist and will earn his doctorate in educational leadership from Maryville University in May.

Mahon said a committee interviewed eight internal candidates and four external candidates for the position. There were a total of 57 applicants.

The district previously announced it would search for a new principal at Fifth Street Elementary, along with the Clearview opening, but those plans are on hold for now since strong consideration is being given to closing Fifth Street and expanding Washington West Elementary.

Fifth Street Elementary Principal Teri Alsadi recently announced plans to retire at the end of this school year.

“We did accept applications for the Fifth Street opening, but we’ve decided not to hire anyone at this time as the school board decides how it wants to proceed with an addition at Washington West,” Mahon told The Missourian.

If an addition is approved at West, it would not open until the 2015-16 school year, he said, so leadership at that school for next year would still need to be determined.

Middle School

At Washington Middle School, the new associate principal will be Laura Bruckerhoff, who is currently principal at Marthasville Elementary.

Currently, Susan Harms and Ron Millheiser serve as co-principals at the middle school. Harms recently announced her retirement at the end of this year.

“With Susan’s retirement, we decided to make Ron principal and search for an associate principal,” Mahon said. “Laura previously taught at the middle school and is excited to come back.”

There were 101 applicants for the middle school opening.

Bruckerhoff began her career with Washington School District in 1998 and taught nine years at the Middle School. In 2007, she transferred to South Point Elementary in the role of administrative intern and in 2008 became principal at Marthasville Elementary.

She received an associate degree from East Central College, a bachelor of education degree from Columbia College and master’s in education degree from Southwest Baptist University. She also taught in Lonedell for five years.

With Bruckerhoff’s move to the middle school, the district now has an opening for principal at Marthasville Elementary.

“We just posted that position Thursday,” Mahon said. “I don’t have a time line yet on that hire, but we will get it done quickly.”

Mahon said the district also is accepting applications for several other positions, including teaching and student support services. Qualified applicants must apply using the district’s AppliTrack online application system.
