A policy restricting city employees from using cellphones while driving may be adopted soon.

City Administrator Jim Briggs told city council members Monday night that the city’s workers’ compensation insurance provider requested that the city adopt such a policy.

When the question of enforcement was raised, Briggs said it would be addressed if an employee is observed talking or texting on a cellphone. Initially a warning would be issued with more serious consequences for subsequent violations, he noted.

The policy likely would exempt police officers and firefighters if they are using cellphones for official business, Briggs said.

“We’ll be looking at establishing a policy,” Briggs said.

He told the council that a policy likely would be presented at the next operations committee meeting.
