Next Tuesday, Jan. 15, is the deadline for candidates to file for Washington City Council seats that will be on the April 2 municipal election ballot.

Five seats, including a one-year unexpired term, will be up for grabs.

So far, there are two races for council seats.

In Ward 1, incumbent Walter Meyer is facing Tom Coulter for the next two-year term.

Ward 3 incumbent Connie Groff and Jeffrey Patke will square off in the race for a two-year term.

Greg Skornia has filed for a one-year unexpired term of Tim Brinker who resigned. Brinker was elected First District county commissioner last November and took the oath of office Dec. 28.

Skornia was appointed Monday night by the council to fill Brinker’s seat until the April election.

Two other incumbents  — Jeff Mohesky, Ward 2, and Joe Holtmeier, Ward 4 — have filed for re-election and had no opponents as The Missourian was going to press Tuesday.

The last day to register to vote in the April election is March 6, 2013.
