She’s best known for her googley-eyed characters, everything from sled dogs to aliens to astronauts, other creatures and human beings too.

Show a child a Meghan McCarthy illustrated title or two, and the child will be able to tell her art from any other.

Students in the area are familiar with McCarthy because so many of her books appear on school library shelves wearing a Book Buzz sticker.

McCarthy recently had another of her books added to Newsbee’s growing collection, “The Incredible Life of Balto,” the youngest Book Buzz pick for September.

Readers of all ages will have the opportunity to meet McCarthy when she comes to the area to talk about “Balto,” at the annual Run to Read Saturday, Oct. 12. McCarthy will meet and greet runners, give a book presentation and hand out trophies.

The fun run and walk begins at 8 and registration is just $10 and includes a free hardback book.

Participants will receive a free T-shirt if they register by Sept. 29.

Those interested in just hearing McCarthy do not need to register and can drop into the library meeting room at 9 a.m. for the author’s presentation.

Following her appearance in Washington, McCarthy will make a book presentation at Scenic Regional Library in Union at 1 p.m. Oct. 12. Copies of her books will be available for purchase at both events, and will be signed by McCarthy.

Past McCarthy Book Buzz Picks are “Pop, the Invention of Bubble Gum,” “Strong Man, the Story of Charles Atlas,” and “Steal Back the Mona Lisa. McCarthy’s newest book is “Daredevil, the Daring Life of Betty Skelton.”
