A Washington woman died Saturday morning when the SUV she was driving ran off Interstate 44 in Jasper County, the Missouri Highway Patrol reported.

The patrol said the victim, Brenda L. Richards, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County deputy coroner.

Richards was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer westbound on I-44 about 9:05 a.m. when she lost control. She attempted to regain control after the vehicle ran off the right side of the highway and overcorrected, according to the preliminary patrol report.

The SUV then travelled across the roadway and overturned in the median, the patrol said.

Richards was not wearing a safety belt, according to the report.

The fatal crash happened four miles east of Carthage.
