The Washington Middle School A team captured its 12th straight competition win at the Tuscumbia Fall Academic Tournament Nov. 9.
The Blue Jays finished with a record of 9-0 and topped Tuscumbia A in overtime to win the Middle School Division.
A total of 12 teams competed in the event, including two from WMS. Teams were divided into two groups for round-robin play, with the top three teams from each group advancing to the playoff bracket.
Washington A emerged from the playoffs as the top team, but still needed to beat Tuscumbia A in an advantaged final to win the tournament.
“That game came down to the wire,” said adviser David Dennis. “The kids will be glad to have that pressure situation under their belts come time for the national tournament.”
Washington B earned fifth place with a record of 4-4.
Team members included:
Washington A — Jonathan Amlong, Carrie Derner, Ryan Hill and Anna Sullentrup.
Washington B — Hailey Howerton, Corey Inman, Wesley Kamper, Samantha Montgomery, Nate Rickman and Emily Wilson.
