Another group of military veterans from this area visited the war memorials in Washington, D.C., Wednesday. It was another trip organized and paid for by Franklin County Honor Flight, Inc.
As is evident, many of the veterans were in wheelchairs. This photo was taken at the World War II memorial. The group, with their guardians, visited all the memorials on their schedule except the Iwo Jima monument where the street was barricaded.
The Franklin County Honor Flight had veterans from nearby counties in its group. After National Park Service employees were furloughed, there was an attempt to close the memorials Tuesday, but veterans and their escorts went around barricades to view the memorials. There was no attempt Wednesday to block the entrance to the majority of memorials.
Franklin County Honor Flight had an earlier flight this year in April. The next one tentatively is scheduled for April 2014.
The number of World War II veterans making the trip is decreasing, and the number of Korean War veterans is increasing. Submitted Photo.
