A gala celebrating Washington’s 175th anniversary will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The dinner and dance will begin at 6 p.m. Musical entertainment will be All Mixed Up. The band will play from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Tickets are $65 and can be purchased at the Washington Chamber office.

A similar event was held during the city’s sesquicentennial celebration, according to Nadine Feltmann, who is co-chairing the 175th anniversary committee with Joe Schneider.

The committee has been meeting for more than a year planning the gala and the main event — a community birthday bash Saturday, May 24.

The May celebration will feature a parade at 11 a.m. through Downtown Washington followed by a picnic at the city fairgrounds with live music on the main stage, canoe races on Lions Lake, children’s activities and many other events, along with food and refreshments.

The following day, Sunday, May 25, a dedication of the Owens monument will take place in Krog Memorial Park. Lucinda Owens and her husband William are the city founders.

Another anniversary event in 2014 will be an invitational antique vehicle display Sunday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Front Street in Downtown Washington.

Anniversary Gala

Joyce Jones, gala chairman, said more than 300 tickets have already been sold for the dinner and dance. She encourages residents to take part.

“This anniversary gala is really a kick-off to our yearlong celebration and it’s an important fund-raiser for all of the upcoming events,” Jones said.

The evening will include a short program. Mayor Sandy Lucy will give the welcome and Feltmann and Schneider will speak briefly about the upcoming events.

The attire for the gala is cocktail.

Sponsors for the yearlong celebration will be recognized at the dinner.

The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, Feb. 14

Sponsors

Sponsors for the 175th anniversary are still being sought. Letters previously were sent out to local businesses, organizations and individuals asking for their support and participation in the celebration.

Sponsorship levels, which are named after the city’s founder and other early leaders, begin at $250.

Monetary donations of any level will be greatly appreciated, said Feltmann.

“We are asking everyone to join us as we celebrate Washington’s past and its future,” she said.

Feltmann said anyone with questions or suggestions on activities for the anniversary celebration can email washmo175@gmail.com or check out the group’s facebook page at www.facebook.com/washmo175.
