Students in grades kindergarten through eight are invited to create a poster that includes the title “Fired Up About Reading!”

The poster contest is being held in conjunction with Family Reading Night scheduled for Friday, March 1, at Washington Middle School.

Award-winning children’s author/illustrator Kenneth Kraegel will visit the school of the student who wins the poster contest.

Kraegel’s book, “King Arthur’s Very Great Grandson,” is a February Missourian Book Buzz Pick. He will be the featured guest at Family Reading Night.

Students’ posters may reflect anything that depicts the theme — a favorite book, where they like to read, who they like to read with, a favorite author, a reading event, why reading is important … just to name a few examples.

Entries should be submitted on poster board or heavy paper, minimum 11 by 17 inches. Any original media may be used to create a flat or two-dimensional effect (paint, crayon, colored pencil, charcoal, etc.).

Student’s first name only and age should be on the front of the poster in the bottom right corner. The following must be on the back of the poster in the upper left-hand corner: Name, Grade, Teacher and School.

Kraegel will make his school visit at 1 p.m. Friday, March 1. The winning student will receive a copy of Kraegel’s book and will be photographed with the author/illustrator for the newspaper.

All posters received will be displayed during Family Reading Night.

To be entered into the contest, posters must be received at the Washington Missourian office at 14 W. Main St. by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.

Official rules can be found on the Missourian In Education page at emissourian.com. For more information, contact Dawn Kitchell at kitchelld@emissourian.com or 636-932-4301.

Family Reading Night is a free community event sponsored by The Missourian, Washington School District and Washington Optimist Club. This year’s event begins at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

This is the 13th year for Family Reading Night, which features stories, crafts and a presentation by Kraegel.

Baskets of books and family reading prizes are given away during the event. To be eligible to win a prize, download the family reading log at emissourian.com and bring it on March 1.

Individuals, businesses or organizations that would like to donate a basket of new books to be given away at Family Reading Night, should contact Penny Heisel at Penny.Heisel@washington.k12.mo.us.
