Veterans are asked to salute the Vietnam Moving Wall when they approach the memorial, which is making a stop at the Washington Fairgrounds Sept. 19-23.

Franklin County Veterans Services Coordinator Mike Pate said he would like to start a tradition here in which veterans salute the wall to show respect for the names enshrined on the structure.

The hope is that a tradition of saluting the memorial can start here in the “heart of the heartland” and go all the way to Washington, D.C., where the permanent memorial is in place.

The 252-foot-long Moving Wall is a scaled replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C.

More than 58,000 veterans who gave their lives or remain missing are listed on the wall. More than 20 Franklin County service members were killed in the war, including one from Washington.

The display is free and open 24 hours through the five-day event.
